Could someone explain what 1x actually means? Is it just like having no magnification, similar to normal vision? Or does it give you a little bit of zoom?

1x honestly feels like “normal vision”. When I’m using a red dot at 1x, I really like that I can keep both eyes open and still be fully aware of my environment. I think it’s more like I’m just adding an aiming point to my natural view.

1 X Anything = Anything. Yes. It means zero magnification. Most handgun Red (or Green) Dot sights are 1X, and, as was explained above, by Mariam, it's simply allowing an aiming point, that (hopefully) if you keep the firearm steady, will allow you to hit that point on your target. Especially, now that I'm getting old(er), I find RDS extremely helpful.

I've got

Mark 6 1-6x20 M6C1 Illum. FFP 5.56 CMR-W

I love the 1 power in the woods hunting. It just clears up my vision, and the illuinated dot is great, be it on 1x or up to 6x for more open hunting areas.
That really helps, thanks for explaining it that way! It seems like it’s more about clarity, field of view, and that illuminated dot rather than just zooming in. I’m happy to hear it still feels natural at 1x and then adjusts well when you need to increase it for more open areas. That’s exactly the kind of practical insight I was after. Thanks for sharing your setup and experiences!
