I'm thinking about taking my 5-year-old out fishing for the first time. I've never really fished before, so I'm a bit lost on what to do. I saw some starter rods at a store and wondered if that's where to begin. Is there a simple setup that's good for kids? I really just want to create some fun memories together outdoors.

Your over thinking because he is 5. And you don't know?

Let him get the kids rod he wants.

Just catch the little sun fish blue gill.

Bobbers. #10 hooks.

Small worms. Trout worms.

A fireball red salmon eggs or two.

Other things that work for those fish. Flys just trout flys. They work better for sunfishes.

You should probably get yourself a 7 or 7'6" spinning rod maybe Cabela's combo rod $60 range about I'd plan to spend.. Medium light or medium.
And a lure .. a gold kastmaster 3/8 oz size.. and get used to casting and reeling that in. You'd be surprised what just that lure can do if you learn something from it.

UphillHabit: your message does not indicate your location, but if you are anywhere near Brimfield, Massachusetts, I have a spinning rod and reel which I shall give to you, for use by either you or your son. You will need new line, but the equipment is in good shape...old, but serviceable. I don't access this site too often but send a message and be relatively patient with an old man, please.

Incidentally, fishing was always FUN! Not very productive many times, but always FUN! Just remember the safety rules when on or near bodies of water: a 5-year-old might or might not know how to swim, but in an emergency, one can never predict a reaction. Be safe, have fun, and make happy memories for both of you!
